Hypoallergenic Pets That Won’t Harm Your Indoor Air Quality

Five Allergy Friendly Pets

You can’t always avoid aggravating your seasonal allergies when you’re outside, but when it comes to your home, you have a lot more say on the quality of your air. Often this comes in the form of a complete ban on pets. It doesn’t have to be that way! Allergy sufferers still have so many pet options, even some breeds of dogs and cats! Here are some of our recommendations.

#1: A Small Dog with Minimal Shedding

Most dogs shed, but some breeds can cause fewer allergies than others based on a lot of factors. However, some people have questioned the idea of a completely hypoallergenic dog. Still, there are some ways for you to limit allergies effectively. For example, smaller dogs have less fur, and so they shed less. Examples include toy poodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese, and some small terriers.

#2: A Cat with Minimal Shedding

In America, dogs are the most popular pet, but it should be no surprise that cats are a solid number two. Most cats shed at least a small amount, but for some breeds, the amount can be minimal. There are a variety of hairless cats, but even some short-haired breeds like the Russian Blue, the Cornish Rex, or an Oriental Shorthair.

#3: Rabbits

If you have pet allergies, it may just be limited to dogs and cats. Even though a rabbit is another furry friend, it might not trigger your allergies in the same way. Rabbit allergies do exist, but they are much less common than allergies from other pets. Just try to avoid the long-haired breeds to be safe.

#4: Rodents

Guinea pigs, mice, rats, and hamsters are all great options for the pet owner with allergies. They stay in cages, which limits the potential allergens from circulating throughout the air of your home.

#5: Fish and Reptiles

Fish and reptiles are also cage-bound, but they even lack the fur and dander that typically causes pet allergies in the first place. Both of these options give you a unique pet and hobby and give you absolutely nothing to worry about allergy-wise.
